Sonic Characteristics
What makes the RAT 2 endure in noise rigs is its distinctive "crumbly" distortion. Unlike modern, overly-polished digital distortions, the RAT 2 adds a fuzzy, analog warmth that feels alive. When paired with low-output sources like contact microphones, the Distortion knob functions as an effective preamp, turning microscopic vibrations into thick, wall-of-noise textures.
Versatility on Non-Guitar Sources
The pedal proved exceptionally useful for circuit-bent synthesizers. Beyond just adding grit, it acts as a tool to stabilize erratic volume fluctuations common in diy noise synths, providing a consistent, resonant depth to the output.
Compared to other popular noise pedals like the DOD FX 86B, the RAT 2 leans into a low-mid "bassy crumble," providing a heavier bottom-end foundation compared to the sharper, crispier textures of the DOD unit.
The RAT 2 is a very versatile pedal despite how simple it looks and seems. It has a beautiful tone and I would highly recommend it for harsh noise.
